A Year in Review

After a long absence over the holidays New Year’s Eve feels like the right moment to jump back in to my little corner of the internet. Between work, holiday celebrations, travel, and a few winter sniffles and aches, December didn’t leave much room to write. I hope the season has filled you with love, reflection, and appreciation for what 2016 has brought us, and for what we will leave behind at the stroke of midnight tonight.…

A Gift Guide for Littles- The Needs

The third and last instalment of our wee gift guide covers the needs in your littles’ lives. The needs get a bad rap when it comes to holiday gifts, but they are some of my favourite things to give and receive.  Something you need can cover anything that would probably need to be bought anyways. In our household this includes sports equipment, all weather gear, books, and other essentials. In case you haven’t checked the…

A Gift Guide for Littles- The Wears

This second instalment of our little gift guide for little covers the wears. We will be starting a tradition for Eleanor where we gift her one want, one wear, and one need every Christmas and despite the bad rap clothing gets I always loved getting it as a kid. For now I have to admit it is as much a gift for me as it is for Eleanor, because I have a lot of fun…

It is officially December, one of the most magical months of the year, and what a week it has been. We have all been taking turns getting colds, our poor pup Olive isn’t feeling very well, and Peter’s business is experiencing its usual crazy December rush. This coupled with above average rain, even for the Pacific Northwest, and the extra activities and to dos that come with the Christmas season and we are all about ready…

A Gift Guide for Littles- The Wants

I love searching for holiday gift guides this time of year. I have found some of my favourite brands and items by reading other people’s best ideas for gift giving. Mark Twain famously said write what you know and I find it time and again to be some of the best advice there is. What I know is the kind of toys that keep the adults and the babe happy in our small space. Toys…

Standing Rock

I have been following the protests at Standing Rock in North Dakota since early this summer. In the months since protesters first camped on the banks of the Missouri and Cannonball rivers I have become more and more invested in their fight. On Labour day weekend when I first saw the videos of private security attacking the peaceful protesters with dogs and pepper spray I was shaken to my core. Each passing month has only…

American Thanksgiving is done and the Christmas holidays are officially on the horizon. I’m trying to get a jump on things this year so I can actually accomplish the long list of festive things I want to do with Eleanor. It also feels like a welcome distraction to everything going on in the world. I do not mean distraction as in I have stopped paying attention to the protests at Standing Rock, or the Canadian…

Holiday Inspiration

It is that time of year again and I’m starting to add little touches to our home to get it ready for the holidays. There are a few things I love about holiday decorating, and a whole host I’m on the fence about. Whenever I walk past a display of Christmas decorations I feel a little bit sad. Most are made of cheap plastics and will remain on this planet, eventually finding their way to…

Ruth Gruber

One of the pioneers of photojournalism and a personal hero of mine passed away this week at the age of 105 and I wanted to take a moment to commemorate her extraordinary life. Ruth Gruber bore witness to some of the greatest atrocities of the twentieth century. Her work documenting refugees, concentration camp survivors and marginalized peoples humanized these events and continues to serve as an important historical record. Among some of her many accomplishments,…

November feels like one big scary blur when I look back at it. Next week is American Thanksgiving and after that we are truly right in the thick of the holiday season.  I’m so looking forward to it this year. More than ever it seems the world could use a reason to cheer. I’m also searching for inspiration for Christmas decorations that feel cozy and festive but take their inspiration more from the forest than…
